Alternative meal arrangements have been set up at the cafeteria at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Lake View after it failed a health inspection Friday in which "black slime" and more than 200 live cockroaches were found in multiple food preparation areas.
The cockroaches were found near the grill, fryer, steamer and storage areas of the cafeteria at the medical center, 836 W. Wellington Ave., according to Chicago Department of Public Health records.
Additionally, black slime also built up on an ice machine and dripped onto ice cubes that were used for human consumption, the records show.
In a statement, the medical center said they were arranging alternative meal services.
“We recognize the importance of maintaining the highest standards for food safety and are taking the necessary steps to address the findings and meet all requirements to safely resume kitchen operations," the medical center said in the statement. "In the meantime, patients continue to receive meals without interruption, with alternative food preparation and meal service arrangements in place.”
The public health department has not responded to requests for comment.
